Frequently asked questions

Q: Who are JRM Products?

JRM Products Limited is one of the world’s leading providers of hop-derived products, founded in 1992 with deep roots in the brewing industry. We operate from our custom-built facility near Edinburgh, Scotland, where we produce high-quality hop extracts and related products for brewers worldwide.

Q: What are Liquid Hops?

Liquid hop extracts are concentrated forms of hops that are used in larger production runs of global breweries. They are made by taking raw hops (usually in pellet form) and processing these to separate the oils or aroma compounds, and alpha acids or "bittering compounds", from the leafy vegetative matter.

Q: Why use Liquid Hop Extracts?

Hops are harvested once annually and farmers begin a race against the clock to preserve the quality for the year ahead. It is very important that the hops are dried and packed carefully and quickly, in order to preserve their quality and flavour.

Whole hops can deteriorate rapidly from the moment they are picked, so most farmers and merchants will dry and pelletise their hops to preserve the yield and quality.

Hop pellets can be extracted using supercritical CO2 to further enhance the shelf-life and protect the quality of the hops long term. After these extractions are performed the products yielded offer a number of benefits to the end user. This process also isolates desired valuable brewing component in each hop from the unwanted components.

Q: What are the advantages of using Hop Extracts?

Liquid hop extracts improve production efficiency, are easier to use, and offer better accuracy and consistency in flavor. Some of our range can also enhance product stability, help make beer more resistant to sunlight, and contribute to better foam retention in the final product. Additionally, they can reduce transport and storage costs - thereby delivering a lower carbon footprint per pint.

Q: Are there different types of Hop Extracts?

Yes, there are numerous different types of liquid hop extracts. These all start from what’s called CO2 Hop Extract, which is a pure resin produced through supercritical CO2 extraction (where the essential bittering and aromatic compounds of hops are separated from the leafy plant material.  From here various different elements can be processed or extracted depending on the needs for the brewer; whether it’s Isomerized Kettle Extract (IKE), Isomerised Hop Extract (ISO) or various others. For more information take a look at our Products Page.

Q: Are liquid hop extracts suitable for all types of beer & brewing?

Yes, liquid hop extracts can be used in a wide range of beer styles, from lagers to IPAs. However, due to their strength they are only really used in large production processes – so JRM processes for the primarily the world’s major breweries, although we do also supply larger craft breweries.

Q: How do liquid hop extracts compare to traditional hops?

Compared to traditional hops, liquid hop extracts offer improved accuracy, consistency, and stability. They are also easier to store and transport, reducing waste and the overall carbon footprint. For brewers seeking precision and efficiency, liquid extracts are an excellent choice.

Q: Who uses JRM’s products?

We sell our products through a series of hop merchants and suppliers, who in-turn work with most of the world’s major brewers such as Heineken, Carlsberg and Molson Coors.

Q: How does JRM contribute to sustainability in brewing?

Our liquid hop extracts are designed to reduce waste, lower transportation and storage costs, and decrease the carbon footprint of brewing operations. We are committed to sustainability and continually seek ways to improve our processes and products in line with environmental best practices. Liquid hops also make the most efficient use of the raw material
